Act XIV
Wouter Persyn

O

live

Kast of kunst?

(ENGLISH)

Wouter Persyn (° 1996) studied architecture in Ghent and Barcelona and furniture design in Mechelen. He balances between architecture and visual art, between graphic and spatial work.

As an architect, designer or artist, he wants to surprise and amaze by playing with the visual aspect.
This was already visible in the mural with which he won the first talent competition of The Crystal Ship in 2017 and thus got the opportunity to realize the work in question within the Ostend street art trail.

His work is inspired by Surrealism, but masters such as Gijs Van Vaerenbergh, Felice Varini or Gordon Matta-Clark also seem to be no unknown references.

Gordn - his recent design for a cabinet and his graduation project @ VOMO Mechelen - pays tribute to the latter.
Cabinet or art? … A matter of perspective. From one specific point of view, the strange cut-outs form a circle… a perfectly round hole in the cabinet, the moment when 3D apparently gives way to 2D, the optical illusion where the cabinet becomes art.

For smartlab act XIV Persyn writes a sequel to this chapter ...
After the cabinet… the hole: O.

Together Gordn and O form a whole... but have never been so physically.
Where as a spectator you had to walk around the cabinet (with the hole) - looking for… O- the tangible hole turns here before your eyes. The amazement is near… with the regularity of the clock that perfect circle reveals itself… take your time.
There is no longer any doubt between cabinet or art.
