Remco Roes (1981, NL) studeerde architectuur in Eindhoven en transmedia in Brussel. Sinds zijn doctoraat (Traversing the interior landscape: five dialogues in existential space) speelt het ensceneren van ruimte(s) een belangrijke rol in zijn werk. Als onderzoeker geeft hij zijn “vrij” werk vorm in installaties.

“Remco Roes verzamelt allerhande fragmenten op zijn pad. Met regelmatige intervals assembleert en representeert hij de versplinterde verzameling die hij achter zich sleurt in de vorm van een installatie. In nauwe samenspraak met de tentoonstellingsruimte ontstaat een tempel voor het moment, het toeval en de status quo. Daarna vallen de onderdelen terug in een chaotische onbestemdheid. Roes bewandelt in zijn werk de fijne lijn tussen spreken en zwijgen, intentie en toeval, op de rand van zinvolle arbeid en nutteloze restruimte.” (Kunstenpunt)

Roes benoemt zijn werk steevast als oefeningen ...”excercises of the man”. ACT VIII voor smartlab past in dat rijtje: EXC204/R70.

R70 verwijst naar de gelijknamige binnenring van Hasselt, alwaar tijdens dezelfde periode een tentoonstelling van ontwerperscollectief het LABO plaats vindt: RING RING verzamelt een 40-tal artistieke interventies verspreid over de Hasseltse groene boulevard. Roes vroeg alle deelnemers van RING RING het restmateriaal van hun fiets-installatie ter beschikking te stellen voor ACT VIII.

Hij rangschikte betreffende onderdelen als een werkplaats/magazijn op de vloer.

Op een platform in de ruimte zoeken die onderdelen vervolgens naar hun plaats, naar een autonome configuratie, naar een choreografie... als een voortdurend work in progress.

ACT VIII werd op zaterdag 15 september 2018 gelanceerd tijdens de opening van RING RING en maakt er tot 11 november 2018 deel van uit.  Die laatste dag hield het midden tussen een performance & one minute sculptures.

After studying architecture (Eindhoven, NL) and transmedia (Brussels, B) Remco Roes (°1981, NL) got his phd with “Traversing the interior landscape: five dialogues in existential space”. That approach of spaces became his signature: Assembling and representing collected objects in installations / enscenery's within specific spaces. Roes works and thinks in “excercises”.

The start for Remco Roes' ACT VIII for smartlab is a city project which takes place simultaneously in the public space of Hasselt. ACT VIII is part of the RING RING project by het LABO. The bicycle installations of 40 artists and designers are spread over the R70 (the peripherical road) around the city. All the engaged artists were asked to save the bicycle parts they didn't use and make them available for Remco's ACT VIII: EXC204/R70. 

All arranged nicely on the gallery floor they reach out to find their place to an autonomous configuration, to a choreography on the platform floating on another level in the smartlab space...

so ACT VIII continued as a work in progress and during the last day of RING RING it held the middle between a performance & a series of one minute sculptures.
